Changes to the Points System, and for the Chase.

At the end of last year, NASCAR fans wanted to see a change in the points system, for this year. NASCAR listened, and did so but now, the fans who wanted this change don’t like it, and they want it to go back to the way that it was. The old points system was complex and hard to understand. However, the new point system they have come up with his simpler and easier to follow, and understand.
Under the old points system:
1.) The top 12 in points would make the “Chase” which is like the playoffs in any other sports. Regardless of wins.
2.) The person who led the most laps would score and extra 5 bonus points.
3.) The person, who won the race, would score 10 bonus points.
4.) The win was for 185 pts., so you have a possible 200 points that you could score in any race. (185 for the win, plus 5 for leading a lap, plus 10 for leading the most laps.)
5.) After the 26 “Regular Season” races, the points would be reset to 5,000, plus 10 points for each regular season win, now this only applies to those who have made the chase (if failing to make the chase, driver points remained the same).
Under the NEW points system:
1.) The chase is comprised of the top 1o in points, plus two who have the most wins, and are in the top 20 in points
2.) If no-one from 11th to 20th has any wins, then the 11th and 12th place person would make the chase, based on points. Just like the old points system. (So that hasn’t changed).
3.) Here’s where it gets simpler. The most points that a driver can win in any given day is 48. (43 points for finishing 1s, plus 3 bonus points (for winning), 1 point for leading a lap, and 1 point for leading the most laps.) For a total of 48 points.
Now that NASCAR has done what the fans wanted, all of the sudden, it’s really not what they wanted at all. It just seems to me, that they wanted something to bitch about, and NASCAR has done just that. Personally, I like the new points system; to me it’s easier to understand. I didn’t understand the old points system. With this new change, I think that it’s going to be a tight point’s battle.
With racing the way that it was last year, the best it has ever been. The championship came down to the last lap, of the last race. This is the way that it should be.
Take Jamie McMurray for example, he won all the major races last year, and failed to make the chase. Inconsistency may have been to blame for that, yes. Under the old points system, he failed to make the chase, however under the new points system, he would have been “in the chase”, so to speak.
I guess that it is all a matter of personal preference, but keep this in mind before asking for NASCAR to change the points system again: NASCAR did what we the fans wanted them too, if the drivers aren’t complaining about it then maybe you shouldn’t. NASCAR sanctioning bodies know what’s best for this sport as whole. Before asking for changing think about if that’s what you really want, just because they change it, doesn’t mean that you’re going like the changes that are made.
